Entering middle school as the new kid is hard, but for Auggie Pullman, the main character in the best-selling middle grade novel Wonder by R.J. Palacio, it's downright terrifying. Auggie has Treacher Collins syndrome, a rare craniofacial disorder that causes major malformations of the face.

Wonder is a contemporary children's novel written by R. J. Palacio and published on 14 February 2012. Wonder is in part inspired by an incident where the author's son started to cry after noticing a girl with a severe facial deformity. Inspiration was also pulled from Natalie Merchant's song of the same name.

They play out in the experiences of the movie's main character, August “Auggie” Pullman, a 10-year-old boy born with a facial difference he refers to as mandibulofacial dystosis, more commonly known as Treacher Collins syndrome. It is a genetic disorder that most often affects the cheek bones, jaw, chin, and ears.

Wonder is not based on a true story, but is inspired by multiple real-life events. The 2017 film was based on R.J. Palacio's 2012 novel and deals with Treacher Collins syndrome. The author's personal experience and a song from 1995 inspired the creation of the book and subsequent film.

Wonder is a well-crafted, well-intentioned movie. But it also downplays some important economic, emotional, medical, and psychological realities...it missed a chance to better represent the experiences of children who are already so widely misunderstood. Content collapsed.

One of the most insightful things about the movie was the intimate look it gave into the day-to-day struggles of living with a craniofacial condition. Auggie not only lives with Treacher Collins syndrome, but he also was born with a cleft lip and palate. Let's look at these craniofacial abnormalities.

Directed by Sebastián Lelio, the film is based on a 2016 novel by Emma Donoghue, who said that while the story is entirely fictional, she was inspired by the "fasting girls" phenomenon, which first began in the 16th century but was perhaps most prominent in the Victorian era (1837–1901).
