Updates to our baggage policy and to some fare options will be introduced across our network and will apply to bookings and modifications made as of June 10, 2024.

We’ll be adjusting fees for seat selection and for additional carry-on baggage in the Corridor and updating the checked baggage policy for our long-distance and regional trains. The complete details will be available on our website on June 10, 2024.

Carry-on baggage

Carry-on baggage are items that you can bring on board and that can either be stored under the seat in front of you, on the overhead shelf or placed in the spaces designated for this purpose.

Please note that purses, briefcases, laptops and small backpacks are considered as personal items.

Checked baggage

Checked baggage service is available only on long distance and regional routes. Please make sure to confirm that this service is offered on your train before its departure.

Baggage must be checked at least 45 minutes before departure at terminal stations and 30 minutes at intermediate stations. Please also be sure to confirm at what time the station opens.

For security reasons, please note that checked baggage is not allowed on board without its owner. Also, if you are planning a connection with one of our travel partners, please consult their website for information on their baggage policy.

Maximum size and weight restrictions
Overweight baggage
Between 23 and 32 kg (50 and 70 lb).
Fee: $25 + tax per item and per direction.

Oversized baggage
Between 154 and 180 linear cm (61 and 71 linear in)*
Fee: $25 + tax per item and per direction.

Surcharges for overweight or oversized items apply to checked baggage only.
Any baggage that does not meet the weight or dimension criteria will systematically be subject to additional charges.
* Linear dimensions are obtained by adding the length, width and height.

Please note that your baggage allowance will be specific to the fare type you have selected.

  • Should you exceed the authorized baggage allowance (in number, size and/or weight), or if you have not declared/prepaid for the additional item included in your allowance (if applicable), VIA Rail cannot guarantee boarding of all items, as space is subject to availability.
  • Each baggage item must be identified with your name, address, telephone number and e-mail address.
  • Maximum baggage dimensions include wheels and handles.
  • Any baggage weighing more than 23 kg/50 lb will not be allowed on board the Corridor trains.

  • For security reasons, checked baggage is not allowed on board without its owner.
  • Important notice: As of June 10, 2024 we are updating our baggage policy. If your booking was made in Economy class prior to June 10, please note that you will need to contact VIA Rail customer service at 1-888-VIA-RAIL (1-888-842-7245) or TTY 1-800-268-9503 (persons who are deaf or hard-of-hearing) should you wish to add additional baggage to your reservation after this date.

In addition to the piece of hand luggage you can also bring one small personal item, things like laptops, handbags or a briefcase and this must be small enough to be stored under the seat. While for flights only bookings, the rules are a bit different. You can carry one piece of hand luggage of up to 10kg for free.
