Is Amex Gold really worth it? ›

It depends on what you're looking for in a travel rewards card, but generally the Amex Gold is a good travel card. This card offers a solid earning rate on flights booked directly with airlines and with Amex Travel — the issuer's portal which offers flight, hotel and cruise bookings.

American Express will pull your credit when you apply. And since it features some pretty decent benefits, the American Express® Gold Card requirements for approval tend to be a little stricter. We recommend that you have a good to excellent credit score, which ranges from 690-850, before you apply.

If you're on the fence about whether it's worth continuing to pay the fee, you can call and ask Amex to waive or lower it. You might not be successful at having the fee waived, but American Express is known to offer generous retention bonuses instead.

The American Express® Gold Card is considered a luxury card since it's a metal card with impressive rewards on dining, groceries, and travel.

When it comes to ongoing rewards on purchases, Amex Platinum has a higher maximum earning rate and better travel rewards. But Amex Gold provides saves you more money on everyday purchases. So, which is better will really depend on your spending habits.
