Family of Wishaw girl involved in hit-and-run share CCTV of car that fled scene (2024)

The family of a child who was “left for dead” in a hit-and-run in Wishaw have released CCTV footage of the car that fled the scene.

The clip shows the silver Vauxhall Corsa vehicle after it collided with Jessica Frew, 12, at speed on Cambusnethan Street in the North Lanarkshire town at 4.30pm on Friday, April 19.

A wing mirror that was detached from the car in the incident is shown snapping off after hitting the schoolgirl.

The video has been shared with the Daily Record in the family’s desperate attempt to trace the culprit.

The car is seen just moments after it smashed into Jessica as she and some friends made their way home from a local playpark. It is understood that the driver senselessly overtook a number of stationary vehicles and sped through a red light as the youngster crossed the road.

More than a month on, Jessica’s dad, Robert, 51, has pleaded with the public to analyse the details of the motor in the footage.

He told the Record: “The person that did this to Jessica left her for dead and is still out there. I want to ask the public to closely look at the details of this car.

“Anybody in the vicinity that has seen it, please check your CCTV or dash-cam footage to get its registration. If you happen to see it out and about, please take note of the registration and report it to the police.

“We need to find the person that did this.”

Jessica was left lying unconscious and in a pool of her own blood as the driver sped away. She suffered a series of horrific injuries, including a disfigured lip, smashed teeth, a severely bruised collar bone and cuts and bruises across her body.

She will also require surgery at a dental hospital as all of her upper teeth have been left fractured. In addition to her physical injuries, the schoolgirl has been suffering from night tremors and anxiety since the incident took place.

Robert said: “When I watched the footage, it made me feel physically sick. It made me ill but it made me furious at the same time, the car just kept going and it was going at some speed.

“Police told us they reckoned it was travelling at around 50mph. My stomach turned over the fact they were flying down that road - they could have killed her.

“The wing mirror snapped off at some force and went flying in the air. It takes some amount of impact for that to happen. When you watch it back, you realise that the driver had no chance of avoiding the incident because they were going so fast.

“The coward drove right through her and carried on instead of stopping to help her.”

Robert said that officers have made “no leads” since Jessica’s attack, despite being shown the CCTV footage and the wing mirror being left behind at the crash site. Police confirmed that there are no further updates to their inquiry.

Robert said: “We’ve been told there are no leads. Police have got the wing mirror and CCTV footage - you’d think they would have several ideas of who it could be.

“Somebody has got to have information about this and they need to come forward. It’s dangerous that this person is still out there, they could end up killing somebody.”

Constable Paul Taylor said: “We are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed this collision and is yet to speak to officers to please get in touch. In particular, we would ask people with private CCTV or dashcam footage of the surrounding area on the afternoon of Friday, 19 April, to check in case they have captured a silver Vauxhall Corsa.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact Police Scotland on 101, quoting incident number 2562 of Friday, April 19, 2024.
